Sigiriya

Sigiriya is one of the main historical and archaeological sites in Sri Lanka and its historical period begins about the 3rd Century BC as a Buddhist Monastery. There had been thirty shelters/ caves belongs to the period of 3rd century BC and 1st Century AD and many of the shelters were dated by the donors’ inscriptions under the drip ledgers.

 

Kasyapa son of King Datusena born to a non-Royal Consort concurred the Kingdom by killing King Datusena and ruled the country 473 – 491 AD. Kashyapa moved the Kingdom to Sigiriya and named it “Singha Giri” meaning “Lion Mountain”

 

Sigiriya is a unique combination of urban planning, architecture, engineering, gardens, and landscaping, hydraulics, arts and paintings; in 1982, UNESCO nominated this ancient historical site as a world heritage site. Sigiriya is a Royal Complex of a rock palace, gateways, pleasure gardens, ramparts and moats

 

Sigiriya is one of the world’s oldest surviving large-scale historical garden. This garden complex comes in three types i.e. water gardens, boulder gardens, stepped or terraced gardens and they all inter connects

Pidurangala Rock

Pidurangala is an ancient Buddhist temple situated near the world famous Sigiriya rock fortress. The history of this temple runs back to the 1st century BC.

Pidurangala is famous not only for its history, it is famous for the panoramic views from its summit a moderate hike and climb to the top of the rock a must do when you are around Sigriya
