Minneriya National Park.

In 1938 declared as a wildlife sanctuary and designated as a National Park in the year 1997. Minneriya situated in the dry zone of Sri Lanka in an extent of approximately 9400 hectares. This national park is one of famous feeding ground to a large number of elephant gatherings in the island. During the season there are 150 to 200 elephants gather near the lake at one moment.

Minneriya national park is not only famous for Asia elephants. In this park it recorded there are 24 species of mammals,160 types of birds, 9 amphibians, 25types reptiles,2 26 types of fish, and 75 species of butterflies and also a very important habitat to two endemic monkeys “ purple faced languor” and “torque macaque” in Sri Lanka. Also Minneriya is one of the Important Bird Areas in Sri Lanka and temporary resident to the migrant birds too.
